It Begins

In a little over a year I will attempt to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, all 19,331 ft. I find it fascinating that a permanently snow capped mount rises from the equatorial heat of East Africa, where it stands 15000 feet above the surrounding plains, isolated from other peaks.
First appearing in Literature long ago by Ptolemy of Alexandria, and immortalized by Hemingway in the "The Snows of Kilimanjaro", the highest mountain in Africa is a many things beautiful, majestic, mystical, and of course, challenging. I feel that challenge calling from half a world away.
As an average 57 year old, the the mountain has already inspired me, I know it will greatly challenge me physically, and I'm sure it will reward me with beautiful memories, whether I make the summit or not.
Over the next year feel free to drop by and share my musings on the mountain, my progress on making preparations, and my thoughts on Hemingway's book (which I have not yet, but will, read). As an avid birder, I will also be studying the birds of East Africa and following my climb will be going an a birding tour/safari in Kenya and Tanzania and the highlights of that tour will also be posted.
